6 Thailand Golf Picks That Are “Twice As Nice” (Part 1 of 2)

Lam Luk Ka Of the many quality golf courses available to visitors in Thailand, some of the best are at facilities with 36 holes.  A visit to any of these will provide a golfing experience that is “twice as nice” as an 18-hole offering. Here are 6 of the best picks; 3 today (all by chance happen to be Bangkok golf courses) and 3 in the next post.

1. Lam Luk Ka Country Club is located about 30 minutes from the old Don Muang International Airport.  Lam Luk Ka is a real “sleeper”, as it is quietly one of the best-kept secrets in Thai golf.  The short Resort West Course is a favorite amongst tourists; however, with water on 15 holes one must manage their shots carefully.  The Championship East Course has hosted several professional events including the 2009 Asian tour qualifying event. Its small, sloping greens will provide a daylong challenge for even the most skilled players.  Tree lined fairways, well placed bunkers and menacing water hazards call for accuracy and skill but good shots are consistently rewarded on this well manicured layout.  The clubhouse offers scenic views back to the course while enjoying a cold beverage or meal at the fine dining facilities inside.

2. Windsor Park & Golf Club is just outside Bangkok and has a unique combination of 36 holes.  Originally known as Panya Park, the A, B and C nines were built at the same time and thus have a similar, traditional feel to them.  Mostly tree lined and always well conditioned fairways mix with ample sized greens that provide an enjoyable challenge.  The newer D nine is arguably the most difficult, with water causing potential havoc on most shots but offering nice vistas, as well.  A very flat and open layout, the D nine combines with any of the other nines at Windsor Park to make for a great round of golf.  Service with a smile is on display throughout the clubhouse and both Thai and Western cuisine is on offer at the restaurant overlooking the golf course.

3. President Country Club is not as well known as some other Thai golf courses; however one will find it every bit as enjoyable.  Both Robert Trent Jones Jr designed courses offer opportunities to hit a variety of shots throughout the round.  A very fair test of golf awaits the player with inviting fairways and ample sized greens.  The putting surfaces are mostly flat but very slick and the experienced caddies will guide any player struggling to read the lines.  A nice combination of long and short holes gives all players the chance to enjoy the game and the relatively short distance from Central Bangkok makes for a pleasant commute. All players will be impressed with the first class facilities and relaxing atmosphere after the round making the entire day a pleasure.
